02. GATHER REFERENCE PHOTOS
these images don't need to be perfect but they should have three key features to provide a good reference:
Clarity
good light, clear image. this will help me recreate all the details of their features.
A Natural Pose
a pose where the subject looks 'like them.' the portrait can only be as good as the references!
Highlight the Face
the money-maker. their face will be the heart of the portrait so find an image that shows it off!
while all these images are cute, here are a few examples of what won't work for reference photos:
Poor Lighting
features indiscernable in dark lighting.
Unnatural Pose
goofy poses create awkward drawings.
Face Unclear
the face - especially the eyes - need to be clearer.
